December 18, 2024 at 9:51 pm in reply to: REAPPOINTMENT OF CAREN FRIEND AS MWTA REFEREE DIRECTOR #12364manlytouchKeymaster
Manly Touch continues to grow and a critical part of facilitating that growth is to accelerate the development of our Manly Touch referees.
It is with pleasure that we can announce that Caren Friend has rejoined Manly Touch as Referee Director.
Caren has had many years experience as a referee herself. She is also a previous Referee Director of Manly Touch, works closely with NSWTA and more recently is an active member of the NSWTA Referees Panel, leading the Level 3 upgrade panel.
Caren will be supported by senior our referee committee. This committee has identified key focus areas for development
Brandon Sanderson will take on the role of High-Performance Coach which will focus on the Level 3 and above referees obtaining higher badges and achieving their goals at tournaments. Brandon is one of the leading Level 6 referees in the world and has already been enormously helpful with the development of Manly’s senior referees.
Also supporting Caren will be Clive Elks and Tom Marsters who will lead the work on Junior Referee Development. This will include working with Referees to obtain firstly their Level 1 badge but then lead the coaching and course requirements for them to move to their Level 2 and Level 3 badges.
One of our senior referees Mark Hawthorne has also joined the Manly Touch Executive which will ensure there is a strong voice for referee development on the Executive to further support Caren.
Manly Touch Referees have prepared their own 3-year plan and you may be interested to know that one of their goals is to have more Manly referees in tournament finals than Manly teams playing in them. I am sure the players will take up that challenge and ensure that this goal is achieved by having to have many more referees in the Finals!
This is an exciting time for Manly Touch and its referees and we are very thankful to Caren for returning and dedicating her valuable time to us and also to all of the referees who are stepping up to help make our club stronger.

President, Manly Warringah Touch AssociationOctober 12, 2024 at 1:40 pm in reply to: CRAZY HAIR & SOCK ROUND – THURSDAY 17TH & FRIDAY 18TH OCTOBER #12236manlytouchKeymasterRound 4 of our Junior Summer Competition is CRAZY HAIR & SOCK round! We want to see all our junior players, coaches, managers and parents, wearing your craziest socks and hairstyles, all in the name of a good cause.
Each year Manly Touch raises funds for people in need via events such as our Crazy Hair & Sock round where we ask each player to donate a gold coin before they play. In 2024, one of our own Manly Family is feeling the weight of health issues that require costly surgery and an extensive recovery period.
We would like to donate the funds raised at this year’s Crazy Hair & Sock round to arguably one of Manly Touch’s favourite referees Pine Crib and his family, to assist with his medical expenses.
This may be a set back for now but we know we will see Pine out on the fields again refereeing in our Junior and Senior competitions, and representing Manly Touch at NSW events very soon!
Ground Supervisors will be on hand to collect coin donations, alternatively we will have our square tap devices for cashless donations.
Manly Touch thanks all our members for your support of our Crazy Hair & Sock round.
manlytouchKeymasterManly Touch wishes to thank Tayla Browne for her dedication and hard work behind the scenes over the last 12 months, as she took on the role of Operations Manager. Tayla came into the role right as our 2023 Junior Summer Competition was about to start, and to say it was a baptism by fire is an understatement. She quickly streamlined many processes and operations of the club in and around our local competitions, and has serviced our members with enthusiasm and expertise during her time in the role.
We wish Tayla all the very best in her next endeavour – although she will not be a stranger to Manly Touch as she is still playing Vawdon and Senior State Cups for our great club this year.
Coming on board with Manly Touch in the role of Facilities Manager is Tom Perrett. Tom has been part of our Junior Summer Competition event crew for the last two seasons and as an ex-police officer of 26 years is well equipped to take on the role of delivering all our local competitions at Nolan and Passmore Reserves each week throughout summer and winter. He will also be responsible for all activity at both the Manly Touch Clubhouse and the Southern Facility, liaising with council, contractors and vendors that frequent the fields, and will take charge of ‘GK’s Buggy’ on competition afternoons/evenings.
Kate Perrett will be taking on the role of General Manager of Manly Touch, overseeing not only the operations of the club but offering senior commercial expertise to the Executive Committee, with a view to taking our great club to more success on and off the field.

manlytouchKeymasterAt our recent AGM, we farewelled our President Graham Knights, who announced that he would be standing down from his position. Although not a surprise, this is a significant change for Manly Touch as Graham has been a part of the Executive Committee for the last 12 years.
Manly Touch would like to thank Graham, or GK as he is commonly known, for his invaluable and immeasurable contribution over this time. Coming onto the Executive as Vice President in 2012, GK quickly assumed the position of President in 2014 and continued in this role until 2018. After a short hiatus in 2019/20, GK headed the call to return to fill a vacancy as Vice President, before returning to the role of President in 2022.
GK not only held Executive Committee positions during this time but has been the Competition Manager and/or Head Ground Manager for our local junior and senior competitions since 2014 – which has seen him do everything from creating and regrading fixtures, to line marking all fields at Nolan and Passmore Reserves, to refereeing at local and state events, to being instrumental in the expansion of our competitions to record numbers over the last 4 seasons.
During GK’s tenure we have seen enormous growth in our junior competition numbers, from a mere 187 teams in 2015 to a whopping 388 teams in 2024, whilst also introducing an U7s competition to cater to our youngest of touch footy players. Our senior competition has also grown despite a declining trend in participation across the sport to now boast 79 teams in our summer competition, with our Mixed grade alone breaking records in 2024 with 36 teams. During GK’s tenure the Club secured both NSWTA Junior and Senior Club Championships over multiple years, along with NSWTA Affiliate of the Year every year since 2016.
We would not have been able to achieve the success this club has experienced in recent years without his valuable contribution, and it is this contribution that saw GK awarded a Life Membership of Manly Touch, unofficially presented to him at our 50th Gala Event earlier in the year, and officially sanctioned and presented at our recent AGM. See further down for a list of GK’s achievements and contributions.
GK will be truly missed by everyone on the Executive.
Thank you GK!
Taking over as Manly Touch President is Kate Perrett. Kate has been involved in the club since her children started playing in 2012, coming onto the Executive as Vice President in 2017. Kate has brought a wealth of sports administration, operations and event management experience to the club, having worked previously in Sports Management with national sporting bodies throughout Australia, NZ, UK and Canada and holding committee positions in other local sporting organisations in Manly Warringah. Kate has continued to improve the club’s operations across our local competition offerings and our representative programs. Kate is now also a touch football player herself, playing locally and for Manly Touch at senior events since 2017.
We would also like to welcome Mark Hawthorne to the Executive Committee for 2024, having taken up the position of General Executive member. Mark may be well-known to many as one of our talented senior referees – Mark is currently a Level 4 – but he also brings extensive commercial and senior leadership experience to the Executive and Manly Touch, having worked within the McDonald’s Corporation for 20 years as Managing Director for both NZ and the UK at different times, and Regional Vice President – Pacific, Middle East and Africa, before moving on to be CEO – Executive Director of Guzman Y Gomez. More recently Mark has been kicking back a little more, having ‘retired’ from the 9-5, but he still holds various non-executive board positions across ASX listed companies in Australia.
Paul MacPherson was re-elected to the position of Treasurer unopposed. Chloe Butcher and Phil McPhee’s positions as General Executive members were not up for election.
Congratulations to Kate, Mark and Paul on their appointments.

Peter Cooper – U12 GirlsmanlytouchKeymasterAnother Junior Rep campaign has come to an end and what a campaign it was for our Junior Boys and Girls teams in 2024.
We travelled to Dubbo for our second Northern Conference and were again met with superb playing fields and sunshine…a little too much sunshine but considering Port Macquarie had torrential rain over the last 2 weeks we must consider the move to Dubbo a clear winner.
Our teams took to the altered playing conditions on Day 1 with vigour, moving through the rounds with some impressive victories. These continued on Day 2 with all teams bar one progressing to finals day on Sunday in good positions despite a couple of broken bones, a bad case of tonsillitis and some other niggling injuries being managed by our Motus physios.
Finals day is always hectic, with teams checking in on each other to find out whether they are still progressing through after each round. With 9 teams in the U18 Boys competition, there were no Quarter Finals, so only the top 4 progressing through to Semi Finals. With our 18s sitting in 5th position they did not progress through.
After winning their Round of 16 match, our 12 Girls were knocked out in the Quarter Finals 2 tries to 1 against Nelson Bay.
As we moved to the Semi Finals rounds, our 10 Boys and 10 Girls came up against some tough opposition in our neighbours the Northern Beaches Renegades, whilst our 16 Girls lost by 1 try and despite both teams scoring 3 tries a piece in the 12 Boys Semi Final, our boys scored second so the dreaded 3-2 scoring system saw their campaign come to an end.
This left only the Grand Final matches to be played, with 4 of our teams earning the right to challenge for the Conference Champions title. Our 14 Girls took to the Stadium first, but unfortunately went down by 2 tries in a hard fought match. Our 14 Boys, 16 Boys and 18 Girls had us all on the edge of our seats – with the 14 Boys convincing winners 5 tries to 3, the 16 Boys coming from behind to win 5 tries to 4, and the 18 Girls lifting their tempo for a 6 tries to 2 win over Nelson Bay – all three teams crowned 2024 JSC Northern Conference Champions!
After the trip back from Dubbo and a quick 6 day turnaround our 14 Boys, 16 Boys and 18 Girls took to the fields at the home of NSWTA in Tempe to compete against the winners of the JSC Southern Conference in the State Finals, in a best of three match format. Conditions were extremely hot, and all three teams were forced to play three matches, as consecutive victories in games 1 and 2 alluded each team.
The 14 Boys were the first to play their deciding third match out on field 1 and grew from their victory in game 2 to take the State Final 11-8. Impressive attacking middle play coupled with some long balls that had the sideline on their feet, made for a fantastic final.
It was then into the Stadium to watch the 16 Boys who quite literally won the match after the bell with a last ditch play. The game will no doubt go down in touch football history as one of the best junior finals – if you missed it check out the replay on KayoSports, you won’t be disappointed. The end result was a 6-5 victory to our Manly boys.
Finally, the 18 Girls took to the Stadium in their third and final match against the Penrith Panthers. After taking an early lead 7-2 our Manly girls looked poised to take out the match but the Panthers had other ideas and hit back with 4 unanswered tries to take the title of 18 Girls Champions, 10-7. A heartbreaking loss for the 18s but a memorable campaign to reach the State Finals considering the team was made up of several players that had never played rep touch football before and we were still pulling in players as late as a week out from the Northern Conference due to injury.
Manly Touch finished second overall in the Club Championship at JSC Northern Conference and secured two State Champions titles with the U14 and U16 Boys victories – a fantastic result for the club.
Manly Touch is extremely proud of all our players and their performances across this 2024 Junior Representative Campaign. We also appreciate the efforts of all our coaches and officials, without whom we would not be able to achieve such amazing results or give our players the opportunity to hone their talents and improve their skills. To our referees we thank you for being such an invaluable part of our rep campaign, all the time and effort given to attend training matches, gala days and finally JSC, is so appreciated. And to the parents and families of our talented junior players, you help make the Manly Family the truly unique and special club that it is.

To our Manly Touch players, parents, carers and spectators,
We are writing this open letter in the hope of reaching you all with some simple requests. Although these requests may be simple, their impact will have far reaching effects so please read on.
In the almost 50 years Manly Touch has been in operation, our Junior Summer Competition has become the pinnacle of the competitions we administer. With almost 400 teams participating across Thursday and Friday afternoons & evenings, we believe it is the biggest local touch football competition in Australia.
With such scale comes many operational challenges, and each season we look to improve on the competition to ensure we continue to offer a social, fun and ultimately safe environment for our players to participate in and their family and friends to enjoy watching touch footy.
In the last two seasons we have unfortunately experienced an increase in behaviour that is unruly, dangerous and even abusive. From yelling and swearing at other players, referees and spectators, to tackling players during a game, to knocking referees to the ground under the guise of trying to run through a gap, to tearing around and on fields during games on e-bikes, to throwing eggs from the sideline at the opposition. As surprising as some of these things may sound they have all occurred over the first 7 rounds of the Junior Summer Competition.
To combat any adverse behaviour, Manly Touch has in place Ground Supervisors located at each Club House and Ground Managers walking around the fields overseeing games. Unfortunately this has not had the desired effect of eliminating, or even significantly reducing, bad behaviour as players and spectators appear to be waiting until the Ground Manager has moved past a game to then act up, or ignoring directions given by Ground Managers entirely. Here is where we need your help with the following simple requests:
- All teams need to have at least one adult present on the sideline of their game, for the entirety of the game
- All players, coaches, managers and spectators need to respect that the referee’s decisions are final. Team captains may respectfully enquire of the referee, matters of varying interpretation or causes of penalties. Any discussion is to be brief and polite and must not delay play. Other team members, coaches, managers or spectators should not talk to the referee
- If there is an issue at your field that is impacting the game or the welfare of players, referees, or spectators, we ask that rather than taking matters into your own hands, that you find a Ground Manager or Ground Supervisor, and ask them to attend your field
- e-Bikes are not to be ridden on fields or the grass areas between/around fields
- e-Bikes to be parked in either of the designated spots marked with an X on the map shown following (click the image to enlarge it), behind the old Clubhouse (Kentwell Road end) and behind field 11
We appreciate that the majority of our players and spectators do behave in a manner that is in keeping with our Code of Conduct and for this we are grateful. If the above simple requests can be adhered to by all attending our Junior Summer Competition we are sure that the incidents that have occurred to date this season will be reduced, if not cease completely.
Yours respectfully,
Manly Touch Executive Committee
